(This is my first review, have mercy!)

One of the advantages of living in Australia, besides the ocean, the warmth, and the utmost tranquility, is that often CDs are released a few days earlier (legendary JB Hi-Fi!!!). So yesterday, Friday, April 30th, I rushed to the record store in the morning to grab the highly anticipated new release from the Deftones.

Given Chino's recent statements in which he claims to be very proud of the result of “Diamond Eyes” and that he wants it to be the link between “Around The Fur” and “White Pony”, the anticipation was immense! Premising that I didn't particularly love “Deftones” and “Saturday Night Wrist” but rather wore out “White Pony” followed closely by “Around The Fur” and “Adrenaline”, I tore through the ten layers of wrapping (jeez, why do they package them like this over here!!!!!) with zeal and hope.

CD quickly slipped into the player and the attentive listening begins strictly with headphones, to try catching every possible nuance. The album flows quite well and on the first listen, the tracks that strike me the most are “You’ve Seen The Butcher”, “Beauty School” and “Sexytape”, thus the central part of the album. The first two perhaps because they vaguely remind me of “White Pony” and the third because, although it's a nice song, in my opinion, it feels a bit too commercial and poppish, much more than other songs of theirs still aired on the much-hated MTV.

The first part of the album and “Risk” are a bit rougher and similar to the early works of the Sacramento band, except for the opening track and title track “Diamond Eyes”, a single already well-heard by all the group's fans thanks to the Deftones' official website making it available. Lastly, the closing tracks, “976 - Evil” and “This Place Is Death”, are appreciable, both very sung and hardly (or better, not at all) screamed. After two days of continuous listening, my personal verdict is that this “Diamond Eyes” does not knock the incredible “White Pony” off the podium and won't be miraculous for those who loved “Adrenaline” and “Around The Fur” more, but in my humble opinion, it easily surpasses the more recent “Deftones” and “Saturday Night Wrist”, which just couldn't stir my inner chords.

Floating under water
Ever changing picture
Hours out from land
In tune with all our dreams

The ocean takes me in
To watch you shake it
Watch you wave your powers
Tempt with hours of pleasure

Take me one more time
Take me one more wave
Take me for one last ride
I'm out of my head

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight
The sound of the waves collide
The sound of the waves collide
The sound of the waves collide
Tonight we ride

Cruising through the city
After hours with me
fusing all our powers
Here's to all our dreams

Take me one more time
Take me one more wave
Take me for one last ride
I'm out of my head

Tonight
Tonight

The title track 'Diamond Eyes' opens the dance in which Deftones show the best of their repertoire.

Once it starts, you can’t do anything but let it run wild until the end driven by the fierce screams of an indomitable Moreno.
