The year 1997 is of fundamental importance for the history of nu-metal for several reasons: this is indeed the year when Limp Bizkit and Coal Chamber debut, but also the year during which Deftones release their second work, with which they manage to create their own sound.
While in 'Adrenaline', their first album, the songs, even if original, certainly draw inspiration from the sound and structure of Korn's songs ("Bored" indeed has a structure similar to "Blind"), in 'Around The Fur' Chino and company head towards a more melodic sound, as can be seen from "Be Quiet And Drive", track number six of the album. "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Around The Fur", more inclined towards the song structure, are similar to each other: both have powerful and aggressive guitar riffs, and in both, Chino starts calmly and then unleashes in the chorus. However, the title of the heaviest song undoubtedly goes to "Head Up", in which Max Cavalera also appears, in memory of Dana Wells, Max's stepson and a friend of the Deftones, who died the previous year.
"Lhabia" and "Mascara" are heavy and fierce songs, but at the same time melodic. Completing the sound of the entire album (let's remember the remaining songs are "Rickets", "Lotion", "Dai The Flu", and "Mx") is Frank Delgado, a new addition: the band thus expands from four to five members. Personally, I consider this the band's best album; perhaps only comparable to their subsequent 'White Pony', where the Deftones engage in new experimentation, heading towards an even more melodic sound and becoming increasingly interested in the passion for 80s music.
With 'Around The Fur', one of the most beautiful albums in nu-metal, the Deftones succeed in becoming one of the most interesting bands in today's heavy metal. Moreover, this album, along with Korn's 'Life is Peachy', which achieved enormous success, will inadvertently spark a new trend: seeing how many fans this type of music gathered, many bands will attempt to imitate the two godfathers of nu-metal.
The greatness of the band lies in creating a powerful and pounding sound, yet simultaneously achieving impeccable melodic openings that leave no escape.
It certainly feels strange to see a band like Deftones not achieving success at least on par with groups like Korn, now at their breaking point.
"Deftones were the pioneers of nu-metal alongside bands that mostly ended up in a pretty bad way."
"Chino sings and a girl’s voice, with a very sexy approach, intervenes during the verses... Truly beautiful."
