Opeth
Technically impeccable, they have produced good and excellent records (some less good). Unfortunately, their limitation is that they sometimes fall into pure self-indulgence as a stylistic exercise, but one can forgive them for it. At the top of their craft (technique + inspiration + ideas), they are unattainable. more
The White Stripes
Amid various carnival-like phenomena and post-anything revivals, they stood out nicely. The point is, it doesn't take much. 4 by a landslide over much of the competition. more

Franco Battiato -L'arca di Noè
A fundamental album for Battiato's future, a pessimistic album that hopes for a reset of today's world for something better. The manifesto of all this is the powerful Clamori, immediately followed by the fierce La torre, the gloomy Radio Varsavia, and the decisive L'esodo. Not that the others are any less, Voglio vederti danzare is legendary and Scalo a grado has one of Battiato's most memorable lyrics. The arrangements are a bit bare, veering away from the richness of its predecessors to something much sparser, digital, and hard; they may appeal to some or not, I stand a bit in the middle. Still, L'arca di Noè is a great album for Battiato, who after the success of La voce del padrone seems to have changed direction towards something different. 8/10, the weakest of the 80s and that says a lot. more
Franco Battiato -Patriots
Do I need to add anything else? It's not perfect like La voce del padrone... but come on, there's Up patriots to arms, there's Prospettiva Nevski, there's Venezia Istanbul, and so on; I could name them all. An album that is still huge today, timeless. 9/10, another classic. more
