Released after 4 years of artistic silence following the previous Blondie album "The Hunter," it was produced by Seth Justman of the J Geils Band. It contains the hit single "French Kissing in the USA," a top ten in the U.K., written by Chuck Lorre, the author of many successful sitcoms, one of which is "The Big Bang Theory." The track was a success throughout Europe, it reached the top ten in Britain and entered the Hot 100 chart in the United States. Other singles released were "In Love with Love," also remixed by Stock, Aitken, and Waterman, a good "dance" success, and the slow "Free to Fall." Among the other tracks is the eponymous "Rockbird," an example of experimental pop-rock written by guitarist Chris Stein, the equally elaborate "Buckle Up," and the rhythmic "Beyond the Limits" signed by Deborah Harry and Nile Rodgers. The album was certified gold in Britain. The cover features a close-up of Harry with the background painted by Andy Warhol. The stylized version of the album was used as the cover of the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."
