Here is the masterpiece in terms of refinement and refined sounds by Ben Gibbard and company.
The album opens with an austere episode, where Ben's soothing voice, accompanied by a timid guitar, allows us to enter his cushioned world of extremely melodic and relaxing sounds. This album indeed evokes atmospheres of ambient and chill-out, especially in the first track Steadier Footing, but also in Movie Script Ending and Styrofoam Plates. However, this is not just simple background music, but rather a soundtrack for anything you want, for any moment, whether it's a car ride back from a long trip or the most romantic moments with your partner.
However, there is no shortage of more English episodes, more rock'n roll, but not garage; the rhythms speed up in I was a Kaleidoscope and in Blacking out the friction, but it never spills into danceable; everything always remains imbued with that intangible delicacy and sonic cleanliness that distinguishes this group. The impeccable taste for melody and new proposals is evident, with strange tempos, refined sounds, and different from the usual pop, which in this case is also permeated by a subtle, almost imperceptible electronic line.
It is a minimal proposal, but at the same time rich with sound variations that cross into different musical fields.
