What Was To Be Known

The Deaf Autumn in “What Was To Be Known” take me back about 10/15 years, to when the Taste Of Chaos was one of the hottest festivals in the alternative scene and where “core” music was starting to gain traction everywhere. Well, in the offering of this trio, I see a lot of nostalgia for those days, invoked through a sound that might call to mind bands like Saosin, From First To Last, Atreyu, and why not, Funeral For A Friend. That is to say, it's an alternative rock with a strong melodic component but at the same time does not seem to shy away from screamo and dark-oriented nuances. Inside “What Was To Be Known,” we find some decidedly interesting tracks like “Get inside of me” (perhaps the best example of the entire batch with an upbeat sound) and “Fuckin’Funny” with the band immediately pushing the accelerator without any fear. It's clear we are not talking about something extremely innovative, but certainly something pleasant to listen to. The work on the vocal parts is good – blending well between a reasonably well-conceived screamo and an attractive melodic line – while the sound, as initially mentioned, is perhaps the part most influenced by the style of the aforementioned bands. The production is intelligently balanced, placing the various instruments on the same level and allowing room for the voices, which are made the protagonists here. In conclusion, this “What Was To Be Known” could be a pleasant dive into the past for those who lived through the US alternative wave of the early new millennium firsthand, while for the newer generation, all of this might sound almost clichéd. What I recommend to the band is to find an even more personal artistic path, as the foundation to do so is certainly there.
