"A painting of colors and meanings envelops this timeless listening experience, track by track, it seems to describe the purest of nights lived before the beauty of an autumnal afternoon"
I believe these are the most humble words my soul allows me to use in describing the wonderful and romantic work of David Sylvian; certainly, "Taking The Veil" does not represent an artistic breakthrough or a monument of historical importance (like Brilliant Trees, Gone To Heart, and Secrets Of Beehive are), but rather an humbly painted canvas in black and white; a story in its own right, which in just a few fragments (there are three tracks in total, not counting the "Taking The Veil" Remix) further unveils the depths of the master's soul.
But here comes the silence of the first seconds, shattered by the fine guitar incursions that precede a jazz-waltz drum rhythm. The first "Funky" lines of a Fretless create the ideal atmosphere for a gloomy and shadowy day flooded by a river of dry leaves; the beautiful atmospheric strokes of the Synth only add that dreamlike and misty touch for which "Taking The Veil" is distinguished; in a few verses, Sylvian's voice takes center stage like that of a stern poet who narrates, with a deep and melancholic voice, the "White" story of a sweet dreaming girl.
Yet within David's words, one can glimpse that profound cry, held back for a past memory that perfectly finds its artistic identification in "Little Girl Dreams"; and captivated by these sweet sounds, by these powerful strokes of Fretless Bass and Acoustic Guitar, we too would dream of the "Leaden Autumn" that the track seems to evoke.
On the second side of the Vinyl in "Answered Prayers" the silence is not broken but accompanied by fragile ethereal sounds where Winds are united with the perfect acoustic brushstrokes of Sylvian's guitar, perhaps an oriental path that seems to narrate the moment of sunset, where our face pauses "torn" by such magnificence.
Even in the second track of side B "A Bird Of Prey Vanishes Into A Bright Blue Cloudless Sky," the words are replaced by the use of winds and synth, so sweet and languid they close our imaginary portrait with artistic perfection, our endless sunset that can never be described with words but only with the emotions of our soul.
This beautiful 12"-inch is accompanied by a very elegant cover that, along with the musical content, physically completes the infinite journey into the colors of David Sylvian.
