I still don't understand if I'm the one being too demanding or if this film is truly disarmingly useless: let me preface by saying I'm a lover of The Simpsons (not a die-hard fan, but I enjoy them quite a bit) and I already turned my nose up 90° after seeing the trailer, in my opinion, depressing.
That being said, I still entered the theater hopeful of changing my mind, but no: this film is just a faded and watered-down surrogate of the TV series that has conquered the world.
The irreverence and naughtiness typical of the series have gone down the drain, the gags are mostly predictable and not particularly funny (especially when you think back to the ton of brilliant and unforgettable moments contained in the TV series), the plot also turns out to be rather bland as well as visibly contrived, and the characters seem transformed into "smoothed-out" copies of themselves (characters that are usually indescribably bleak here appear almost like good people, and I'm also referring to Homer, portrayed only as a father eager to reunite with his family...!) to the point that even the film's subtitle, "Watch our family, feel better about yours" seems almost out of place.
Sorry, but without the sharp humor of the series, a Simpsons movie has no reason to exist, and the appearances of Green Day or Bart's nudity aren't enough to salvage what is nothing more than a mediocre film.
Two stars because, of course, there’s worse, but especially looking at the infinite possibilities they had to create a brilliant film, even one star would be deserved.
