LA RECENSIONE

Good old Croz! At 73, he has made one of his best albums ever. Certainly his best solo work (also because he has released very few!). His songwriting brilliance remains intact, although well-supported by the significant collaboration of his son James. His voice has miraculously remained crystal clear and immune to existential storms. A crew of first-rate musical collaborators, including his protégé, a superb acoustic guitarist and excellent vocal harmonist, Marcus Eaton.

Beyond the prestigious contributions from Knopfler and Marsalis, it is precisely the perfect instrumental and vocal mechanism that enhances the entire album. The lyrics, as always, tackle both his personal ghosts and the social themes so dear to Uncle Croz. Personally, however, I am decidedly drawn to the dreamlike, ethereal atmospheres of the tracks written in solitude and performed exclusively with the accompaniment of the acoustic guitar, of which Crosby himself is still a magical interpreter. See, for example, the stupendous If She Called: a sophisticated harmonic structure in line with his most personal style, an evocative and enveloping melody, and a spine-chilling vocal performance! There are 3 or 4 true gems on the album that absolutely do not make one miss the golden years of his hippie youth in those former times in California. I'm referring to Holding On To Nothing, the aforementioned If She Called (I repeat, a masterpiece!), Slice Of Time, and, lastly, Morning Falling.

In short, a great album from every point of view! Welcome back, old great Croz, our very best regards! I address the eternal fans, and also those who have never listened to him, or have somewhat underestimated him: listen, folks, listen!
