I feel obliged to try to write a dignified review of the Dave Matthews Band because I find it important for a Rock group like theirs to find space here among so many music enthusiasts. I'll give it a try. I choose the album "Before These Crowded Streets" even though I will always be convinced, like many other devoted fans, that Dave Matthews knows how to give his best, especially live, not to mention the unforgettable all-acoustic performances with that great guitarist Tim Reynolds... If you can, go watch the performance of these two in their Storytellers...
But let's move on to the album in question. The DMB released it in 1998, and it is a very successful record. Naturally in the States, where they are always sold out, also because in Italy they are not appreciated as they should be. Dave has a very distinctive voice, warm, deep, yet unexpectedly modifiable. And he knows how to use it very well. It's a Rock full of personality, elegant, at times refined. "Crush" is perhaps the most successful song, in rhythm, melody, and choice of instruments. The sax is legendary in this piece, which is a crescendo of vocal and sound virtuosity up to the final verse where Dave gives his best.
Very unique "The Last Stop" with its oriental melody repeated to the point of obsession. Beautiful and melodic "Spoon" with Alanis Morissette joining the Band in a piece of great atmosphere. In my opinion, it's an album worth buying and listening to multiple times. I admire DMB for their ability to experiment and renew themselves in every album. And for the impact of their Live shows. I pray every day not to have to go all the way to the States to see one. So far, it's been unlucky for me. But if one day my wish is granted... come with me, you won't regret it.
