After a series of good but not outstanding productions, Darkthrone return to the scene with this "Hate Them"... and the title alone makes it clear that Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have no intention of taking prisoners.
7 powerful demonic anthems in pure Darkthrone style, 7 tracks where Nocturno Culto's gravelly voice, alternating between English and Norwegian, screams anti-Christian anathemas, while Fenriz (drummer and main composer and lyricist of the band) pounds his drum skins with his usual power and speed.
The songs are in the classic evil extreme Norwegian black metal style typical of Darkthrone, the band's trademark made famous by albums like "A Blaze...", "Under A Funeral Moon" and "Transilvanian Hunger".
If you already own the aforementioned albums and think it is the moral duty of a band to revolutionize their music with every release, perhaps "Hate Them" will not be to your liking... but what can you do, this is Darkthrone, take it or leave it.
In a black metal scene increasingly suffocated and devoted to mere recycling of ideas, "Hate Them" stands out as one of the best releases of 2003, light years ahead of the albums from the hundreds of clone bands of the Norwegian duo.
