In 1997, Dannii Minogue, Kylie’s sister, released “Girl,” her third studio album. Six years after her debut with “Love & Kisses” and six years before releasing her most successful album “Neon Nights,” she released a pop-dance record with nods to techno-style music typical of the late 90s and also included trance and ambient songs in some cases.
The difference between the first two records is also highlighted by her search for DJs as producers, for instance, the very talented Xenomania.
Dannii's image also becomes sexier and less girl-next-door; all possibly part of a marketing strategy, including a change in hair color; given that Kylie in the album “Impossible Princess” also from 1997 has dark hair, magically Dannii becomes blonde and the job is done.
The first track, and also the first single, “All I Wanna Do” is pop-dance but semi-techno; here Dannii’s high notes blend perfectly with this Minogue anthem. It is followed by “Heaven Can Wait” which is very pop and “So in Love with Yourself,” another pop-dance with a surprise, Kylie, the sister, doing backup vocals. “Am I Dreaming” continues the pop streak, while the beautiful “Everybody Changes Underwater” is a very relaxing ambient music track. The second single “Everything I Wanted” follows, again mixing pop-dance with techno, the same thing that happens with the next track “If It Moves - Dub It,” made even more danceable. “Disremembrance,” the third and final single, takes us to the ballad of the album “Amazing,” where Dannii reaches beautiful and very sensual notes. “Moving Up” is the last very danceable tune before the final hidden track, the cover “Coconut,” where Dannii plays with computer effects to change her voice.
Although the record has nothing to do with the beautiful album “Neon Nights” of 2003, it is still a gem in the magical world of pop before the new millennium and surely, despite having a more renowned sister, Dannii did her best to ensure this album would be remembered and especially reviewed.
Thanks to this “Girl,” in 1998 Dannii embarked on her first and last live tour titled “Unleashed Tour” with stops only in the United Kingdom.
