Damon Albarn (frontman of Blur) is currently experiencing a truly fruitful artistic period: working on Blur's Think Tank and its follow-up, with Gorillaz for the eagerly awaited second album, with musicians from Mali for the follow-up to the beautiful Mali Music, and as if that weren't enough, he decides, during hotel breaks on Blur's American tour, to create some small demos of his own.
With a laptop, keyboard, guitar, and an 8-track recorder, he records this Democrazy (a clever play on words).
The artist will explain in the future that he will use the demo crazy for the new Blur album and that of the Gorillaz, so it becomes natural for us listeners to already categorize the tracks based on their destination.
Let's start with "I Need a Gun," with 19/2000 Gorillaz-like keyboard and a nice pop chorus, "Reedz" is an instrumental track with Arabesque sounds complete with computer-made percussion, "Half a Song" (as the title suggests) is part of a song, very beautiful but sadly interrupted...
"Five Star Life" is one of the best tracks, with Radiohead-like sounds, I could see it fitting well in a Gorillaz album; "Back to Mali," as the title itself suggests, has African sounds (the chords used are very beautiful...); "I Miss You," another beautiful track to listen to in a future Gorillaz album.
I'll stop here because there are quite a few songs to mention; I point out the best song on the album, which in my opinion will surely be present in the next Blur album, namely "Sub Species Of An American Day".
Anyway, don't rush to look for the CD in stores... also because the CD doesn't exist! Damon Albarn decided to release a limited edition of 5,000 vinyl pieces.
Good Luck.
