Anyone who has seen the Irish singer live knows that in this setting, Damien Rice and his songs gain added value. This is thanks to arrangements and technical solutions capable of giving a new look to the already excellent tracks. The guitar loops played and then sent in a loop, the sometimes quirky instruments used by the artist, combined with his interpretative skills, have over the years created an intimate and fascinating show for the spectators' eyes and ears.
In this live performance, much of this is not seen. The reason is simple: although it was published in 2007, the album contains a performance that took place four years earlier, just after the release of the first LP "O", when we were evidently still far from future stylistic choices.
The various "Delicate", "Amie", and "The Blower's Daughter" are therefore presented in their beauty, almost identical to the original versions. Only "Volcano" deviates from this pattern, with violin and guitar building up and the voices of Damien and his partner Lisa Hannigan intertwining dramatically in the air.
It is precisely the latter who sometimes steals the scene, as in "Then Go", with that strong yet broken voice that will allow her in the future to write several works of interest in the folk field.
The audience seems to appreciate the performance of the two singers with shouts and applause at the beginning and end of the song, the only downsides being the absence of several pieces in the setlist and the consequent cut between one track and the next.
It's a pity because it would have been a much more interesting operation.
Tracklist and Lyrics
01 Delicate (05:21)
We might kiss
When we are alone
When nobody's watchin'
We might take it home
We might make out
When nobody's there
It's not that we're scared
It's just that it's delicate
So why'd ya fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed
From the only place you've known
Why'd ya sing hallelujah
If it means nothin' to ya
Why'd ya sing with me at all?
We might live
Like never before
When there's nothin' to give
How can we ask for more?
We might make love
In some sacred place
That look on your face
Is delicate
So why'd ya fill my sorrow
With the words you've borrowed
From the only place you've known
Why'd ya sing hallelujah
If it means nothin' to ya
Why'd ya sing with me at all?
02 The Blower's Daughter (04:59)
And so it is
Just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
Most of the time
And so it is
The shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes
And so it is
Just like you said it should be
We'll both forget the breeze
Most of the time
And so it is
The colder water
The blower's daughter
The pupil in denial
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes
Did I say that I loathe you?
Did I say that I want to
Leave it all behind?
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind
My mind... my mind
'Til I find somebody new
03 Volcano (05:23)
Don't hold yourself like that
You'll hurt your knees
I kissed your mouth and back
But that's all I need
Don't build your world around volcanoes melt you down
What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for the sea
Don't throw yourself like that
In front of me
I kissed your mouth your back
Is that all you need?
Don't drag my love around volcanoes melt me down
What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for what I give to you
Is just what I'm going through
This is nothing new
No no just another phase of finding what I really need
Is what makes me bleed
And like a new disease she's still too young to treat
Volcanoes melt me down
She's still too young
I kissed your mouth
You do not need me
07 Amie (04:25)
Nothing unusual, nothing strange
Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario, the same old rain
And there's no explosions here
Then something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
I saw a spaceship fly by your window
Did you see it disappear?
Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of "O"
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me
Nothing unusual, nothing's changed
Just a little older that's all
You know when you've found it,
There's something I've learned
'Cause you feel it when they take it away
Something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
But I'm not a miracle and you're not a saint
Just another soldier on the road to nowhere
Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of "O"
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me
And Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of "O"
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me
