The Profile

Damian Robert Nesta “Junior Gong” Marley is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist, the youngest son of Bob Marley. Active since the early 1990s, he blends roots reggae with dancehall and hip hop. He is a multi–Grammy winner for Halfway Tree, Welcome to Jamrock, and Stony Hill.

Born 1978 in Kingston, Jamaica; son of Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare; active 1992–present; four-time Grammy winner (Halfway Tree – Best Reggae Album 2002; Welcome to Jamrock – Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance 2006; Stony Hill – Best Reggae Album 2018).

Mauri’s review of Welcome to Jamrock praises Damian Marley’s talent and his blend of roots-reggae with hip hop, dancehall and R&B. Highlights include the incendiary title track, Road to Zion (with Nas), and Confrontation. Some tracks are criticized as too radio-oriented, though the album is deemed well-produced by Stephen Marley. The piece frames Marley as renewing reggae while staying tied to Jamaican tradition.
