As every new user registered with De-Baser, I was browsing through the various reviews and surprisingly I notice that for this album and this band there is only a meager entry: no review?! We must remedy, even if the disc is now dated September 11th, 2006, not too late for the truth.
Why so meticulous, you may ask. The reason is simple: in my (very personal) opinion it is one of the best albums of last year, on par with various Clinic, Cat Power, Long Blondes and the like. The French combo offers a dark and psychedelic sound, drawing heavily from the Pink Floyd tradition, reworked in Mogwai style.
Long well-structured suites prepare the listener for inexorable crescendos that culminate in guitar walls, see the opener "Words", the following "Sunny Morning" or even "Guilty" and "Recurring". The title track "Sweet Beliefs", along with "In Union With…" and "Let it Play" instead give us moments of calm (after the storm), drawing Scandinavian landscapes à la Sigur Ros.
The finale is breathtaking: "Sparks of Love" reaches the album's climax with its thrilling ups and downs and Cyann's ethereal voice. An album to nourish yourself with over the long winter that will surely please fans of the genre. If you missed it rush to get it.
