There are songs with truly absurd titles, like "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict" by Pink Floyd or "Da Zehul Wortz Mekanik" by Magma, but really something like "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" stands out on its own.
You might not recognize it by name, but I believe everyone has heard it at least once: it was indeed one of the biggest hits of 1994. The band is the Canadian Crash Test Dummies, led by the singer-guitarist Brad Roberts, who possesses a very distinctive voice capable of hitting very low notes, which has been the true trademark of the band (still active, by the way).
The success of "God Shuffled His Feet" was truly astounding, and it would never be matched again by Brad and his companions. The album is well crafted, very catchy music yet original, with folk undertones (among the instruments played are the mandolin and harmonica) and quite successful arrangements. Aside from "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm", which is truly irresistible from every point of view, other standout tracks include the title track, also released as a single with more than positive results, and "Swimming In Your Ocean", masterfully performed by Roberts. Even "Afternoons & Coffeespoons" and "In The Days Of The Caveman" aren't bad, but the other songs, although all nice in their own way, offer nothing new.
Let's remember that we are still looking at an album that, no matter how successful it might be, is always pop, and pop is immediately appealing, but after a while, it becomes tiresome... And God Shuffled His Feet is no exception. Listened to several times carefully, it leaves, as they say, a "bitter taste in the mouth".
Sure, if you're on a road trip, it's certainly better than the radio!
