THE REVIEW

David Coverdale = Deep Purple = Whitesnake = Voice of the Madonna.

Jimmy Page = Led Zeppelin = Firm = Most beloved guitarist of the Seventies.

Coverdale + Page = formidable album and band.

So it could be summarized, in a sort of macaronic mathematical formula, the grand performance offered by these two great artists, who in 1993 released a great album (with a horrendous cover).

Let's start with "Shake My Tree", the best song on the album: big riff with the semi-acoustic guitar, rhythmic stops, harmonica, lyrics 100% about sex (shake my tree...), voice that, although it's true that in the verse it's raspy, in the chorus it's worthy of the best Robert Plant. "Waiting On You" is another great job, but even here in the verse Coverdale's voice unfortunately isn't at its peak. But despite this, the piece is captivating, with the great Page in blazing form. Superb is the slow "Take Me For A Little While", passionate and stunningly emotional. The arpeggio is marvelous, the keyboard and the little electric guitar phrase nearly indescribable. "Pride And Joy" represents the apotheosis of Led Zeppelin-like guitar rhythms, and is nothing but a beautiful blues-rock as nostalgics like it. "Over Now" is the most original track on the album, with its "Kashmir"-like passages, which differ from the very hard rock verse. Coverdale returns to the old glories and splendor of old times. "Feelin' Hot" is a dynamic and powerful track, full of speed, with a big guitar solo by Page and an almost stadium-like chorus in the middle. "Easy Does It" recalls the atmospheres of Led Zeppelin III, with that beautiful atmosphere created by the 12-string acoustic and the electric guitar's effect-laden little arpeggio.

"Take A Look At Yourself" is instead a track more tailored for Coverdale, with atmospheres of the latest Whitesnake, those of "Slip Of The Tongue," to be specific. "Don't Leave Me This Way" is a more bluesy track but essentially centered on very classic parameters, without strong emotions and perhaps a bit too long. "Absolution Blues" starts with Page's "outburst" with his fabulous big guitar, to then give life to one of the great rhythmic riffs, on which Coverdale offers an excellent performance. Finally, it closes with the magnificent "Whisper A Prayer For The Dying", a track with a mood steeped in a certain mysticism and another great "guitar lesson" offered by Mr. Page. A rough but effective closing piece.

This album helped David Coverdale get out of a rough patch, after the end of Whitesnake and voice problems; it provided yet another proof (if there was ever need for one!!!) that Jimmy Page is the cornerstone among guitarists of all ages; but this album was in ‘93 above all also the manifesto of a granite background of old rock that stood solid to remind those who, for example, were making grunge, that the future is nothing without the past. Many criticized or simply snubbed the Coverdale-Page project, judging it as nothing more than a useless and pathetic attempt to emulate Led Zeppelin or a gaudy desire for a revival of times gone by that could never return. In my opinion, however, it's just a great album of honest, unpretentious rock, as no one seems able to produce anymore, as evidenced by reaching number 5 in the charts. The only real flaw might be just the moments of decline in David Coverdale's voice, which, however, was already on the road to recovery. At times it croaks like a crow, but perhaps it would be more poetic to say it roars like a lion...

The real failure was the planned world tour, an authentic flop, which led the two artists to each return to their own paths. There are 6 tracks that were ready for the next album, never released. In any case, it's a real shame that the musical union of two artists of this kind was limited to just one album, remaining only a side-project, inevitably forgotten.

Summary by Bot

Coverdale Page's 1993 self-titled album brings together two rock legends, David Coverdale and Jimmy Page, delivering honest and powerful rock music. Despite some vocal decline from Coverdale, the album features strong guitar riffs reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and blues-rock elements. Standout tracks include 'Shake My Tree' and 'Over Now.' Though the collaboration was short-lived and their planned tour was unsuccessful, the album remains a solid testament to classic rock's enduring spirit.

Tracklist Lyrics

01   Shake My Tree (00:00)

02   Absolution Blues (00:00)

Bless me, Father, I have sinned
I've broken hearts, got drunk on gin
And still I lust for sweet young things

On the day that I was born
Bells rang out in Babylon
Still I can't tell right from wrong
No matter what the Good Book says

Now I can see the sun is shining
But I can feel the rain
Falling down to wash my tears away
Wash my tears away

Holy Mother, save your tears
You've cried for me a thousand years
But I was blind to all your fears
Now I can't stop the tears from falling down

Come the dawn of judgement day
I'll get down on my knees and pray
St. Peter don't you, don't you send me away

Now I can see the sun is shining
But I can feel the rain
Falling down to wash my tears away

Bless me, Father, I have sinned
I've broken hearts, got drunk on gin
And still I lust for everything
Every little thing

Come the dawn of judgement day
I'll get down on my knees and pray
The Good Lord don't send me away
I'll never ever go

Now I can see the sun is shining
But I can feel the rain
Falling down to wash my tears away

Wash my tears away
I'll get down on my knees
Don't send me away
Don't you send me away, no, no, no

''Absolution blues
Absolution blues''
Ow, ow, ow
Ow, ow, ow

03   Whisper A Prayer For The Dying (00:00)

04   Waiting On You (00:00)

My heart is breaking, my whole life is shaking
Every way I turn, I know this love is gonna burn me
But I'm waiting on you, no matter what you do
Ever since you went away, I suffer each an' every day
An' I can't hide the heartache anymore
You left me all alone, just waiting by the telephone
Too scared to step outside this prison door
An' I'm waiting on you
Chorus:
No matter what you say, no matter what you do, this heart is dedicated to you
'Til the rivers run dry and the sun no longer shines
I'm still gonna make you mine
I'm waiting on you, waiting on you
Ever since I started drinking, my ship's been slowly sinking
So tell me what's a man supposed to do
When people stop and stare and see me drowning in despair
'Cos it's written on my face, what I've been going through
An' I'm waiting on you
(chorus)
I'm waiting on you, waiting on you
(Solo)
My heart is breaking, my whole life is shaking
Every way I turn, I know this love is gonna burn
Love is gonna burn, love is gonna burn
Burn me, baby, burn, your love is gonna burn
Ever since you went away, I've suffered each an' every day
An' I can't hide the loneliness no more
All the tears I've cried, all the love I've been denied
An' still you find me waiting on you, baby baby babe
(chorus)
I'll be waiting on you, waiting on you
My heart is dedicated to you, and I'm waiting on you, waiting on you
No matter what you say, no matter what you do, this heart is dedicated to you
'Til the rivers run dry, I'll be waiting on you, waiting on you
My heart is dedicated to you, and I'm waiting on you, waiting on you
No matter what you say, no matter what you do, my heart is dedicated to you
'Til the rivers run dry, I'll be waiting on you, babe

05   Take Me For A Little While (00:00)

Now my days are growing cold,
All the memories unfold
Thinking 'bout the friends we lost,
Wondering how to count the cost,
Now my days are growing cold

I can hardly wait any longer,
Now the feeling's growing stronger
Thinking 'bout the times we had,
Good times always turn into bad,
Now my days are growing cold

Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make me smile
Why don't you take me for a little while

As I watch the rising sun,
I see a new day just begun
Thinking 'bout the sacrifice,
Wondering how to pay the price,
Now my world is growing cold

Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make me smile, make me smile
Why don't you take me for a little while

So now my days are growing cold,
All my memories been told
Thinking 'bout the dreams we lost,
Wondering how to count the cost
Now my days are growing cold

Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make me smile
Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make, me make, me make, me smile

Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make me smile.
Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make, me make, me make, me smile.

Make me smile...

Why don't you take me for a little while,
Sing me songs, you know, will make me, make me, make me smile.
Somebody take me, take me, won't you make me smile...

06   Pride And Joy (00:00)

Take me to your river, baby, take me to your sea
Purify my soul and pour your ocean over me
Lead me to your chamber, where you sleep at night
Scratch your name across my back, make me feel alright

You're the best time I have ever had
You look so good, oh babe, you must be bad

Diamonds on your ankles, sapphires on your shoes
Your little gems of wisdom chase away my blues
Mama's little princess, daddy's pride and joy
I'm like a kid at Christmas, playing with your toys

You shake me in the morning, I wake up black and blue
Ooh child, you act so wild, I'll name a hurricane after you
Scarlet fever kisses, little Miss Dynamite
Youngblood, you look so good, I'm gonna leave on all the lights

So I can see where I'm goin', baby
Play that thing

So take me to your river, baby, take me to your sea
Purify my soul and pour your ocean over me
Lead me to your chamber, where you sleep at night
Scratch my name across my back, make me feel alright

I have never felt this good before
If you want I'll sleep outside your door
You're the best time I have ever had
You look so good, oh babe, you must be bad

You must be bad...

07   Over Now (00:00)

08   Feeling Hot (00:00)

Hey, gypsy woman, roll your dice for me,
Read my Tarot cards, so I can see.
I'm razor sharp, cool sunglasses,
Pocketful of backstage passes.
Lady Luck, roll your dice for me.

The boys are feeling hot, tonight,
Fingers crossed, they get it right.
Women to the left, women to the right,
The boys are feeling hot tonight.

I ain't too proud to beg for what you got,
You'd melt a heart of ice, babe, you're so hot.
So pump it up, raise the dead,
Squeeze it, honey, 'til it's cherry red
I ain't too proud to beg for what you got.

The boys are feeling hot, tonight,
Fingers crossed, they get it right.
Women to the left, women to the right,
The boys are feeling hot tonight.

Feeling hot, feeling hot, feeling hot,
feeling hot, hot, hot, hot.

Feeling hot...

Now I just wanna make sweet love to you,
I'll do anything you want me to.
So rip it up, slip an' slide,
'Scuse me if my tongue gets tired
An' I will make some sweet love to you.

The boys are feeling hot, tonight,
Fingers crossed, they get it right.
Women to the left, women to the right,
The boys are feeling hot tonight, hey, hey, hey.

Look out baby!

The boys are feeling hot tonight,
The boys are feeling hot tonight,
The boys are feeling hot tonight.

Rip it up, baby...
