The Profile

Coven are an American occult rock band formed in the late 1960s and fronted by vocalist Jinx Dawson. Their 1969 debut, Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls, featured the ritual piece Satanic Mass, followed by the albums Coven (1972) and Blood on the Snow (1974).

Known for pioneering occult rock aesthetics and early use of the sign of the horns; included one of the earliest recorded Black Masses (“Satanic Mass”) and a song titled “Black Sabbath.” Fronted by Jinx Dawson; bassist credited as Oz Osborne on the debut.

Two reviews chart Coven’s leap from overt satanic theatrics to a deceptively sunny pop-rock sheen that still reeks of dread. Jinx Dawson’s voice is praised, the debut’s ‘Black Sabbath’ and ritual elements loom large, and Blood on the Snow is framed as bright surfaces hiding darker rooms. Overall tone: intrigued and appreciative.
