The Profile

Confessor is an American progressive doom/death-doom band from Raleigh, North Carolina, formed in 1986. Renowned for Scott Jeffreys’ piercing vocals and Steve Shelton’s intricate, shifting rhythms, they debuted with Condemned (Earache, 1991) and returned with Unraveled (Season of Mist, 2005) after reuniting in 2002 following the death of founding member Ivan Colon.

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina (1986). Debut album Condemned released by Earache Records (1991), reissued in 2015. Reunited in 2002 and released Unraveled via Season of Mist (2005). Signature elements: Scott Jeffreys’ high-register vocals; Steve Shelton’s complex drumming.

Two glowing DeBaser reviews chart Confessor’s evolution from the bewildering, atypical death-doom of Condemned (1991) to the somber, brain-twisting Unraveled. Reviewers celebrate Scott Jeffreys’ sky-high vocals and Steve Shelton’s complex rhythms, noting Raleigh roots and a 2015 Earache reissue. Unraveled follows the band’s 2002 reunion after the death of founding member Ivan Colon. Overall sentiment: reverent and emphatically positive.
