The new album by Colle der Fomento is a flawless rap album, textbook perfection, and indeed, no one can take away those two stars out of five.
The friend with the shield lied to us, it's clear now, he went for a spin around the ring road for eleven years, while the cryogenically frozen ones in his place were actually these three hype guys. The instrumentals, the "brawl skills," the "drive," the mic, and all those things put in the right place, and then the mean lyrics to finally assert they still find themselves "outside," are part of the vast array of clichés fielded by the Romans in this nth round.
And of course, I know that this record WANTS to be what it is, namely the spokesperson for authentic, classic rap, the stuff that rips through today's trap mess (or whatever you want to call it); an old record for old folks, but if-some-young-people-listen-and-get-obsessed-with-our-rap-all-the-better. That's the goal. However, it's one thing to stay in your little room talking to the same old lifelong friends, another to come back with great pomp with cleverly crafted hype. It doesn't seem to me that being stubborn and anachronistic is that great—especially when at forty years old, or maybe more, you're still acting like a horny kid, champion of the underground with the cap on and joints that nearly smoke themselves for you—but now I'll check better and get back to you (editor's note: I checked in the end, and I was right, it's not great).
It seems to me precisely the pompous attitude that, mind you, I never like, that of "doing the real stuff" and presenting oneself as a rigid alternative to the new things, if not the innovations, of today. I couldn’t care less about realness, then you do as you please, but really ask yourselves what you're chasing, and for what reason. So I want to conclude with a huge thank you to this record because juxtaposed with the rest of the contemporary nonsense, it allows them to shine in all their frivolity, making it clear to me, once again, that it's not nonsense we're dealing with.
