Rating: Hyper-prolific period for the ever-rising Coldplay.
Chris Martin's band, after the terrifying critical and public success of the latest "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends," releases this EP, "Prospekt's March," just a few months later. It consists of eight unreleased tracks produced during the sessions of the latest studio work. The beautiful cover is once again by Eugene Delacroix (this time the choice fell on "The Battle of Poitiers").
The production, consequently, is once again entrusted to the expert hands of Brian Eno (aided by the band itself), and the dance is kicked off by the notes of the first single "Life In Technicolor II," a version accompanied by vocals of the beautiful opener from "Viva La Vida...". It is followed by a short (barely fifty seconds) and melancholic instrumental for voice and piano ("Postcards From Far Away"), which introduces us to "Glass Of Water," an energetic and vibrant britrock track with beautiful guitars and a pleasantly offbeat rhythm in the refrain. The aptly solemn, Lennon-esque ending also stands out.
"Rainy Day" is perhaps the most unusual song in Coldplay's entire discography: light and rhythmic, as well as varied and somewhat "schizophrenic," it features a string-based interlude aiming to recreate the splendid and harmonious atmospheres of the megahit "Viva La Vida". The next "double feature" "Prospekt's March/Poppyfields" is the closest thing to "Parachutes" that Coldplay has done in recent times. "Lost +" is an unnecessary and predictable remake of the third single from "Viva La Vida..." together with rapper Jay-Z. "Lovers In Japan (Osaka Sun mix)" differs very little from the original, while "Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground" closes the EP with an appreciable lo-fi à la Graham Coxon.
A good "completion" work of the mother record, this "Prospekt's March." Awaiting the new album already in the works with faithful Brian Eno again at the helm.
