The most well-known version of the Sicilian legend about Colapesce tells of a certain Nicola, the son of a fisherman, who was nicknamed this way due to his ability to move and dive in water and collect treasures from the seabed during his underwater expeditions. This Sicilian singer-songwriter, Lorenzo Urciullo, known as Colapesce, is exactly a little gem who is making his way more and more into the Italian independent music scene: his second album (released in February 2015), "Egomostro", is testament to this.

With "Entra pure," the first track on the album, Colapesce invites us to enter his world, where between ballads and more rhythmic pieces we find ourselves among human monsters understood as weak beings, full of fears, anxieties, who at the same time want to feel strong, thanks to self-convictions that fuel their ego. In "Egomostro," one is nothing but the slogan of oneself whose effect resonates in the virtual ether; even before carrying out any actions, there is only "social" sharing ("specialist in selfies, there's no escape for food, it's already shared, even before eating"), as a point of arrival and self-affirmation.

"Brezny" is lightheartedly light and very pleasant to listen to, even more so if you pay attention to the message. I would almost say that Colapesce, with this song, earns my deep respect and admiration because he mentions the one who now dictates the choices of those who are merely at the mercy of events. A musically light yet bitter in message: rather than making mistakes, better to rely on astral projections, much more convincing than a swallow that heralds spring (?!). What better than reading Brezny's horoscope?

However, the real strength of this singer-songwriter lies precisely in his ability to disguise simple and banal concepts in unconventional stylistic structures. Just think of two songs that capture the true essence of everything that does not generate selfishness (when you are with someone) and transforms the monster/our SELF into Us. "Reale" is the best track on the album in my opinion. What better than the surprise of a love born from the unexpected that becomes real? A microscopic hypothesis that suddenly takes shape and lights up, becoming "An eclipse in my bed, the room is a planetarium, maybe you'll be love under a microscope." Because deep down, you don't need hypnosis techniques to understand what's being talked about when confronted with certain emotions. It's not magic (which I feel when listening to this track), but REAL life.

In the same vein, the song "Le vacanze intelligenti" (the title of which recalls the film by Alberto Sordi, within the collective "Dove vai in vacanza?") insinuates itself, where within the frame of the Venice Biennale, one finds appreciation for art thanks to someone who is ecstatic in front of certain works. It is necessary to be in her presence to have the sensation of capturing the artistic and visual spirit of the entire exhibition - "Now for example, in the Belgian pavilion, in ecstasy, it's about how you look at them, you're better than those cuts, you're all my countries." The individual’s world gains value if inserted into the universe of Us.

The last noteworthy track is "Maledetti italiani". Colapesce does not feel like a true Italian and affectionately curses his compatriots. Here too, the smallness of those who feel "secure" in their own world is reiterated, a world made of self-convictions and false truths of those who feel they have reached the finish line in a competition that, however, has no rules.

In short, "Egomostro" is a varied album that I listen to, even after some time, with pleasure because Colapesce is an artist capable of creating a unique musical experience: these are not the usual little songs, but interesting plots that create curious vibrations in the mind (and beyond) of the listener.
