Coincidenza is the name of a project that brings together, at each meeting, different musicians who have never interacted before to record an album, under the banner of total expressive freedom.
This is the second CD produced and features important names from the international scene including Jean-Hervé Peron (bassist of the Faust), Chad Popple (drummer of the Gorge Trio and formerly of Colossamite), Mat Pogo and JD Zazie from Jealousy Party (one of the best improv groups in Italy), whereas the first album focused on the avant Roman scene.
The album is definitely recommended for those who appreciate experimentation in all its forms, but here we are dealing not with a hastily assembled ensemble playing randomly, but with a plethora of musicians aware of their own abilities and capable of bending the cage of musical genres into living matter, boiling lava that flows between the CD's grooves. So, it spans quite a bit over the 69 minutes of the CD, from free noise, playful vocalisms, math rock, and jazz (track 15 is an example of mutant be-bop), with sometimes rock-like developments (track 7), sometimes akin to the most minimal ambient (number 16).
From what I understand, the Sui of the title derives from the I Ching, the book of changes, and corresponds to "following": "Above is the serene, whose character is joy, below is the exciting whose character is movement. Joy in movement leads to following”. What is certain is that this is an excellent example of daring improv yet in constant balance: none of the participants (11 in total, but in different formations for each track) overpower the others, and everyone seems to have found harmony in the noise of this ultrasonic collective.
Worth marking on the map, even though it is an unrepeatable group.
