There exists a borderland where souls do not die despite not being alive. There are doors connected to other dimensions that open to things that we humans cannot even afford to imagine. There are people, few in truth, who have the keys to access these parallel universes and sparingly use this great resource to slightly elevate the destinies of all humanity.

The Cocteau Twins, with this "Victorialand," prove to be among them, and this album is the key. The album is projected towards an "intangible and airy dream pop", in a blend of coldness and magic that evokes fairy-tale scenarios both lysergic and unsettling. Here, Elizabeth Fraser's voice, unique in its genre, makes this indefinable sonic mix even more seductive and mysterious. Her light sonic textures, fragile and sharp like ice stalactites, have been defined as "ancestral sounds," but I believe any definition leaves room for a thousand interpretations, all more or less valid and shareable. What is certain is that Liz has a vocal talent that very few singers in the world possess (one of which is Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance), made unique by the fact that the songs do not have real lyrics but sounds, phonemes, and chants free from any earthly meaning (precisely).

Analyzing the individual tracks is a sterile exercise because what predominates is the alienated and enveloping atmosphere of the entire project, an atmosphere rendered acoustic and electrified at the same time after an exhausting studio search, a search that became a true obsession for the group during the mixing phase (it was 1986!). My old LP, to play correctly, had to be played at the speed of 45 RPM, and this is because the CT experimented at that speed to achieve the best sound relative to the desired effects. Gems aside, a rather strange album, with gusts of veiled melancholy that evoke sensations similar to those felt when floating underwater, where everything reverberates and the world, seen from this perspective, appears to us as slowed down and enchanted like a dilated dream that never wants to end.

Soon I see it wasn't even he who was less
I almost let us ...
Feel the sun
early morning millionaire

Gone against the greater good
So here's what I do
If I listen we're nowhere
early morning millionaire

I feel the balance in the solace of the earth
(and I like it... )

I feel the balance in the solace of the earth
(and I like it... )

I feel the balance in the solace of the earth
(and I like it... )
