THE REVIEW

In “Peppermint Pig”, the gothic side of the Cocteaux is taken to the extreme.

This extended lays the foundation on which the subsequent album will be built: if “Garlands” represents a tunnel with no exit, here it is as if we are facing the immense entrance of that mammoth cave that evokes, with its exasperated reverberations, “Head Over Heels” (1983).

The title track “Peppermint Pig” opens (and closes, also, in 12” version) the record: a more or less light, almost “danceable” track, with its bass line, and the usual, beautiful, “garlandsian” guitar scratching everything. This is a piece that indeed recalls a certain Joy Division / NewOrder style (note: “NewOrder” and not “New Order”!). In “Laugh Lines” (a chilling gothic anthem) and “Hazel”, the Cocteau Twins combine originality and mannerism, proving to be a solid and bold band and simultaneously paying homage to the greats of dark wave.

The tracks of the EP (except for “Peppermint Pig -12” Version”), “cleaned up,” alas, and remastered, were included in the collection “Lullabies to Violaine” of 2005.

Cocteau Twins

Cocteau Twins were a Scottish band associated with 4AD, widely credited as key architects of dream pop. Reviews highlight Elizabeth Fraser’s distinctive, often non-lexical vocal style and Robin Guthrie’s reverb-heavy guitar textures, with early work rooted in dark wave/post-punk and later releases becoming more melodic and accessible.
