Smell of alcohol and engines. Echoes of blues, American sun, rock and dirt. They are Clutch, a staple in stars and stripes rock for twenty years now. Capable of mixing stoner, heavy, blues, and hard rock into an explosive and fun concoction.
Today, they've finally returned with their raw power, four years after "Strange Cousins From The West." Their new work aligns with its predecessors, yet carries Clutch's desire to frequently change form, producing records never identical to the previous ones. "Earth Rocker" in this sense has a freshness and an immediacy that was missing in some past releases: simple and direct tracks like the title track, "Mr. Freedom" and "The Face" are clear evidence of this.
Clutch are well-versed in the craft and compose compelling pieces. There are no hyperbolic sophisms nor instrumental escapades: theirs is a simple and straightforward street rock, capable of both embodying a country-scented ballad like "Gone Cold", and rocking the rhythm of the splendid "D.C. Sound Attack!".
The latest Clutch endeavor is filled with their love for the most bluesy and boozy rock. No pretense of inventing a genre but plenty of attitude and the ability to navigate a musical world suitable for them. 45 minutes of good old rock.
