A pale sun illuminates the day, an unpredictable, yet intense day, regardless of the color of the sky and the slope of the road, the still silence does not kill, the strings of the heart vibrate, even violently, the sea is calm. . .
The music of the Clogs introduces an undefined spatial realm, teetering between the real and the surreal, between contemporary classicism and post-rock, between light and darkness. The album opens with the Italian guitarist Luca Tarantino with "Kapsburger", a 17th-century piece for lute (Johan Hieronymus Kapsberger - 1580/1651), "Canon" slow and sinuous, revolves around a hypnotic guitar riff accompanied by tribal percussion softened by melodica and bassoon, "5/4" one of the fastest pieces, almost Tortoise-like with jazz nuances, "2:3:5" violin and bassoon rest on the soft carpet created by the guitar arpeggio, oriental atmospheres barely appear, "Tides of Washington Bridge" the mandolin duets with Dessner's classical guitar to become a trio with the bassoon, fragile and clear, "The Song of the Cricket" is a swirling crescendo, the classical guitar plays endlessly, a simple arpeggio that is smothered by electric guitars then concluded in a brief disarming polka, "Death and the Maiden" (the essence, as well as the highest piece) guitar and violin intro like a soundtrack opening the way to world music percussion, a confrontation with the rigid classicism of Schubert, "Tides (piano)" is a piano ballad, a reminiscence of Chopin's Prelude in E Minor, op. 28 No. 4, evocative and full of beauty, "Fiddlegree" showcases Newsome's virtuosity on the violin, "Lantern" very sweet is the only one with vocals giving it a Celtic air.
The "classical" music of the Clogs follows a creative process very close to rock and jazz but with a romantic soul, typical of classical musicians, the tension is always high, minimalism and modernism are highlighted in elegant and melancholic melodies. "Ho trovato il tuo cuore sul tavolo, lo tengo stretto a me mentre faccio colazione, poi vado a fare la spesa e lo appoggerò sopra il mio" Living light or tired light, still light, for me. . .
