Vaporwave might well be the manifestation of a taste that finds its sense in the musical and cultural nihilism void. However, it is not a bad thing; on the contrary, it allows us to find and discover (also thanks to YouTube algorithms and vintage passion) real unknown gems, for some reason left in the oblivion of the collective subconscious, or even never listened to at the time of their release.
This is the case with this single by Clio (alias Maria Chiara Perugini/Roberto Ferrante), a project released in 1985, which I honestly do not remember ever hearing on the radio back then, but today, despite all this amnesia, is considered the best Italo Disco track ever (with all due respect to Sabrina Salerno and Valerie Dore). Strange, because Clio doesn't even appear on Wikipedia (under the Italo Disco entry). But how is it possible that the quintessence of our local synth-pop did not find its place even in the 1985 Mixage of Baby Records?
Now, whether one likes Italo-disco or not, this should never hold us back from listening to "Faces", because the retro-wave/retro-pop dreamlike taste soon spreads in its colorful atmospheric vaporousness (note the intro with the slowed-down synth effect), continuing in an innocent circular sequence of pleasant electro dance impressions linked to the Eighties summer imagery, with the corresponding fantasies of loves already blossomed in all parallel universes.
Oooooh, I’ll never walk on the sun till we can't find a way to love,
Oooooh I’ll never walk on the sun till you won’t touch your face no more.
Highly recommended for all fans of the ephemeral vintage genre. The proto-vaporwave and pre-hypnagogic pop effect is guaranteed, even without the use of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBD) vaporizers.
In short, "Faces", is a true diamond that does not hesitate at all in the hypnotic void of 審美的な蒸気ウェーブ, as a stylistically affected product, and today it finds in the genre’s enthusiasts (and beyond), a clear (structured and finally indisputable) reference point of pure synth-pop lightness.
