Claudio Milano is an Italian experimenter, composer, and music therapist. He has always worked on the voice used (following in the footsteps of the great Demetrio Stratos) according to all its possibilities. Among the various styles he has approached, he has also explored Tibetan and Vietnamese overtone singing and improvisation. We are indeed faced with a 360-degree artist. His offering is certainly not suitable for all ears: we are in the realm of research and avant-garde music, music that is often not understood by the public because it is too challenging. I must admit that I myself usually have difficulty relating to albums for voice alone. However, I must say that this live album titled “ManifestAzioni live 2011-2023” has the gift, despite its sophistication, of a certain accessibility. The recordings come from concerts held between 2011 and 2023 in Italy and France, and were chosen from a vast amount of material. What characterizes these compositions is a libertarian spirit that combines ancient and modern. There are many languages used in this context including modern and medieval Italian, German, Latin, Greek, old French with a pronunciation distant from today’s, Gaelic, contemporary Friulian and Patriarchine language, Sicilian dialect, and grammelot.
In the first track, among the musicians, we find people of the caliber of Walter Calloni, Paolo Tofani, and Ares Tavolazzi (Area). Indeed, the spirit of Demetrio Stratos is revived here, thanks also to the voice of Claudio Milano: the sounds are an update of the sound of the same Area. Truly an exciting moment. We also find the famous harpist Vincenzo Zitello: the latter, together with Claudio Milano himself and Paolo Tofani, is the protagonist of “Nostro padre ci aspetta”, a touching tribute to Claudio Rocchi. In the second CD, the artist engages with the project NichelOdeon in the track “Surabaya Johnny” with music by Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht. I believe that the more open-minded prog enthusiasts will find something to their liking while listening to this album. "ManifestAzioni live 2011-2023” represents, overall, the summary of Claudio Milano's career, a courageous artist who undoubtedly deserved a celebration of his art. The digital version also contains another tribute to Claudio Rocchi.
