THE REVIEW

The formation of Ciccone Youth (Sonic Youth plus Greg Ginn and Mike Watt) was initially supposed to release only a single with covers of "Into the Groove" and "Burnin' Up", but due to the success they achieved (especially in the UK), they decided to continue.

The project was born out of a desire to have fun (Thurston himself says, «there was no action plan. The only goal was to survive another day. We all love to experiment, make noise, and mess around») and is very different from other SY albums.

The album (recorded before "Daydream Nation" but released later for marketing reasons) indeed contains studio experiments (Kim Gordon singing over a karaoke base of "Addicted To Love"), guests (besides the aforementioned Watt, J Mascis in "Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening To Neu"), covers of commercial tracks, white hip hop ("Tuff Titty Rap"), and various noises.

It is an original work full of interesting insights, born from SY’s creative side, less attentive to market logic. It might not be a masterpiece but it still deserves attention.
