Chris Marker (1921–2012) was a French filmmaker and multimedia artist, a key figure in essay film and experimental documentary, best known for La Jetée (1962) and Sans Soleil (1982).

Often credited with pioneering the essay film and notable for innovative use of still images in La Jetée; commonly cited real name: Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve.
