Despite their participation in the soundtrack of The Punisher – a grave demerit, considering the poor quality of the film in question – with the track "Still Running," also featured on "This Type Of Thinking," Chevelle presents their third full-length effort with few but very clear ideas. It is always frustrating (especially for those forced to highlight it!) to trap a musician's hard work within rigid frameworks or, worse yet, prefabricated labels. However, the play of references and influences is all too apparent with the young Chicago trio formed in 1995 by the Loeffler brothers.
Chevelle's compositions, a nu-metal version of Hanson, lack creativity from the very first riff. This significant flaw, which might discourage more than one person from making music, does not prevent them from nailing a couple of tracks that are nevertheless destined to disappear from any listener's mind within a few weeks. In the light of the most favorable reading, the most impactful tracks – the opening The Clincher and the first single Vitamin R – come across as a sweetened and cunning revival of the atmospheres created by Tool's Maynard James Keenan. Regrettably for our persevering rockers, it must be remembered that Tool is still active: to satisfy the appetites of the mass public, there's already the side project A Perfect Circle, led by the same Maynard. One might almost say “make way for the young,” but if the future is represented by these pale followers, it's better that good Maynard continues his double work.
