Excluding some exceptions that I do not intend to list here, the first half of 2010 has provoked intense yawns in unison regarding mainstream musical novelties: the usual advancing Gaghian electro-pop, pseudo-electronic emulations of such melodic custom (Ke$ha), little hint, therefore, of yet unheard. In short, nothing or little new on the musical front. A real shame for all music devourers like myself, always in a spasmodic and spastic search for new releases to consume in a millisecond of a nanosecond.

An exception to the above is one Cheryl Cole, an English singer, front-woman of the total-girl group Girls Aloud, a formation known and appreciated almost exclusively in the realms of Queen Elizabeth and in Ireland. While browsing websites that could give me straightforward and direct information on the biography of this band (Wikipedia, yes indeed), I learned about the great popularity Cheryl Cole and her companions possess at home. Cole, however, thought it wise to temporarily step out from her musical team in favor of her solo career, a trend all bands experience sooner or later during their creative journey.

The album in question is 3 Words, conceived almost exclusively with the leader of the Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, a collaboration that resulted in a refined work with R&B, Hip Hop, Dance, Electro-Pop sounds. A simple yet not banal nor expected album. Mainstream, but with grit and creativity.

Let's start with the first single, a great success not only in England but also in Europe, with positive echoes even in the Bel Paese, Fight For This Love, a frivolous mid-tempo dance tune, nice, engaging, very catchy, with R&B and Dance-Pop influences. The title track 3 Words, performed with the now omnipresent will.i.am (who will duet in three other tracks on the said album) who has produced a very danceable electro-house track, romantic and sentimental, alternating simple love song guitars with powerful up-tempo beats.

The R&B tinges soften into lounge bar sounds and Soul tinges in the third international release Parachute, third anglophone success, in my opinion quite weak compared to the rest of the record. Things rise back up very validly with Make Me Cry, an R&B track, warm and sensual, with a high vocal tone almost comparable to Morissette, and with the dramatic and intense Rain On Me, simple and direct, more poppish.

Perfect for a non-hyperbolic and misleading dance-floor from electronic exaltations and the likes is Stand Up, a mid-tempo produced by Taio Cruz, danceable and engaging, while in Boy Like You and Heartbreaker, both featuring will.i.am, it embraces a Hip/Hop - Urban with R&B and Dance-Pop shades which avoid hyperboles and exaggerations, leaving room for simplicity and frivolity. Romanticism and sentiment are expressed, perhaps with too much honey and sugar, in Don't Talk About This Love, a popish track, quite leaning towards the mawkish.

What makes this work, 3 Words, rather valid and convincing to my auditory pavilion is its simplicity, the lack of electronic exaggerations, the deprivation of distortions and heavy beats, to absolutely favor a pure, compact, basic but not banal pop, a prerogative that seems to have disappeared from the music biz. Catchy, light, simple tracks precisely, make this work compact, sincere, and coherent. We won't be at the level of sacred monsters like the new releases from Kylie Minogue, nor will we have a musical masterpiece to adore and glorify, we will have light, catchy, simple tracks. Unfortunately, simplicity is becoming the least sought-after value in the world. Recommended to lovers of good pop, carefree, without glitter and various assorted hyperboles.

I don't tell anyone about the way you hold my hand
I don't tell anyone about the things that we have planned
I won't tell anybody
Won't tell anybody
They want to push me down
They want to see you fall (down)

Won't tell anybody how you turn my world around
I won't tell anyone how your voice is my favourite sound
Won't tell anybody
Won't tell anybody
They want to see us fall
They want to see us fall

I don't need a parachute
Baby, if I've got you
Baby, if I've got you
I don't need a parachute
You're gonna catch me
You're gonna catch if I fall
Down, down, down

I don't need a parachute
Baby, if I've got you
Baby, if I've got you
I don't need a parachute
You're gonna catch me
You're gonna catch if I fall
Down, down, down

Don't believe the things you tell yourself so late night and
You are your own worst enemy
You'll never win the fight
Just hold on to me
I'll hold on to you
It's you and me up against the world
It's you and me

I don't need a parachute
Baby, if I've got you
Baby, if I've got you
I don't need a parachute
You're gonna catch me
You're gonna catch if I fall
Down, down, down

I don't need a parachute
Baby, if I've got you
Baby, if I've got you
I don't need a parachute
You're gonna catch me

I won't fall out of love
