It's often nice to dare a little more... and that's exactly what the Cheer Accident have been doing for almost 20 years. A Chicago combo that includes members from well-respected bands (You Fantastic, Gastr Del Sol, etc.), formed at the behest of keyboardist/drummer Thymme Jones back in 1985. With this album, their ninth work, produced by Steve Albini (who had previously produced an EP in 1989, Dumb Ask), the band offers us a journey characterized by unpredictability, mastery, and a touch of madness that never hurts.

The track opener "The Autumn Winds Is A Pirate" is a journey of over 22 minutes in a Don-Caballero style that spans pure improvisation, rhythm changes, and a motif that always returns at the end after long digressions, absolutely genius.
There are both more exciting moments and calmer ones, only to explode again in a completely deconstructed sound.
"Camp O'Physique" follows with a slower mood and the terrifying voice of Jeff Libercher.
The best moments are "Track 029" and "Smile," pure gems of originality and claustrophobic sound.

This work is worth listening to, especially in this moment of general flatness; it's interesting to revisit this band that has always moved in the depths of Chicago's underground, perhaps forgotten and unrecognized but able to express music rich in abstractions and illusory paths.
Pure avant-garde... only for lovers of the genre.
