The Profile

Charalambides are an American experimental/psychedelic folk group formed in Houston, Texas, in 1991 by Tom Carter and Christina Carter. Their shifting lineup has at times included Heather Leigh Murray and Jason Bill. Known for long-form, minimalist guitar pieces and spectral vocals, they have released key records on labels including Kranky.

Members include Tom Carter and Christina Carter; contributors have included Heather Leigh Murray and Jason Bill. First widely noted release: Our Bed Is Green (1992). Joy Shapes was released in 2004 on Kranky. Their sound blends psychedelia, drone, and minimalism (with references to Tony Conrad).

Two DeBaser takes on Charalambides spotlight an austere blend of psychedelia, drone, and minimalism. Unknown Spin is framed by a near 30-minute title track and Christina Carter’s unsettling vocals. Joy Shapes (Kranky, 2004) earns respect for originality but leaves one reviewer cold. References to Tony Conrad’s minimalism and blues/psych roots recur.
