The Profile

Cervello are an Italian progressive rock group from Naples formed in 1971. They are best known for Melos (1973, Dischi Ricordi), a flute-driven, keyboard-free album with lyrics inspired by Greek mythology. The band featured guitarist/composer Corrado Rustici and vocalist Gianluigi Di Franco, with strong sax/flute colors by Giulio D’Ambrosio and drums by Remigio Esposito. A 2017 Tokyo live release documents a later-stage performance.

Formed in Naples in 1971; presented within the Italian avant-garde/prog milieu; sole studio album Melos released in 1973 on Dischi Ricordi; music noted for prominent flute, complex arrangements, Mediterranean character, and the absence of keyboards; Corrado Rustici later played in Nova and with Zucchero; Gianluigi Di Franco handled lead vocals; live recordings exist from 1974 and from a Tokyo concert in 2017.

Two DeBaser reviews celebrate Cervello’s lone studio album Melos (1973) for its Mediterranean, flute-forward, keyboard-free take on progressive rock. Reviewers highlight Greek-mythology themes, complex arrangements, and the leadership of Corrado Rustici. Vocals by Gianluigi Di Franco and sax/flute textures earn special mention. Overall verdict: highly acclaimed Italian prog.
