Celestial Season was a Doom Metal band from the Netherlands. After their commercialization in 1997, specifically with the release of the album "Black Queen is Dynamite," they seemed to disappear from the scene.
Not a defunct band, but not an active one either.
The best releases under the name Celestial Season, as is customary, were those produced at the beginning of their career. A decent debut titled "Forever Scarlet Passion," a second work titled "Solar Lovers" (which I will talk about shortly), and a third EP, the controversial "Sonic Orb," geared towards Stoner sounds.
Among the three works of the Dutch formation, "Solar Lovers" remains the best and, if you will, the most complete from a compositional standpoint.
Starting with a Doom-Gothic style akin to My Dying Bride, complete with violin, they arrived at the second album by introducing some novelties.
The main novelty lay, at least at the time, in perfectly blending the atmospheres of the sad albion souls of the early '90s with a more psychedelic Doom closer to that of Black Sabbath and Pentagram! A treat for those who, like me, love both expressions of the slow-sound born in Birmingham in 1969 and developed in a "dark" way thanks to Paradise Lost and Anathema.
I can only point out excellent songs like "Decamerone," "Solar Child," "The Holy Snake," and "Vienna," the latter a cover of the much more famous Ultravox. Also beautiful are "Fandango" and "The Scent of Eve."
On one hand, as you might have guessed, you will encounter a weeping violin and dark growl vocals. On the other, guitar riffs that owe much to the '70s.
A gem for every true Doom lover and, if you'll allow me, a record that expresses much beauty. From the cover to the last note contained in the disc.
