Rating: Over the years, Emilia has been a reservoir of more or less avant-garde musical impulses, while also being strongly traditionalist. From the Italian bel canto of Gianni Morandi to the profound singer-songwriter style of Guccini, from Zucchero's domestic blues to Vasco Rossi's (at least initially anarchic) rock. In between, Skiantos and CCCP, then CSI, finally PGR. Two of the most atypical groups on the Italian music scene, indefinable, especially the former, more punk the latter. They were definitely punk, but with a distinctly Italian punk style, a bit out of time, since their first album, "Compagni, cittadini, fratelli, partigiani," was released in 1985, and punk in America had already exploded, if not almost out of fashion.
Giovanni Lindo Ferretti (1953, vocals and lyrics), Gianni Maroccolo (bass), Francesco Magnelli (keyboards), and Massimo Zamboni (1957, guitar) were all, more or less, almost thirty when their first album came out. An adult age, not exactly rookie beginners. They had absorbed the entire Emilian dance music tradition and listened to all the overseas punk, or at least what was worth listening to, mixed it up, and created a genre. One they created themselves.
If the first record still appears a bit raw (but there's already "Mi ami?", the most beautiful punk love song ever written), it's with their second work that they breathe life into the narrow Italian music scene which, in those years, we’re in 1986, was seeing, in part, the end of more classical singer-songwriter music (the '70s had ended some time ago) and the apex of the new wave.
They arrive, sing, play, and in barely 38 minutes, they make the Italian music world more interesting and more beautiful. The album's title (which references the title of an article that appeared in the "Quotidiano del Popolo" back in 1962) might be misleading; the record isn't political, or at least not viscerally so. The group undoubtedly comes from left-wing backgrounds, but here they aim to tell something else. Exemplary in this case is the famous "Io sto bene," whose chorus proclaims: "Non studio, non lavoro, non guardo la TV, non vado al cinema, non faccio sport." The CCCP want to narrate the boredom and existential state of living in the province. From this point of view, they hit the target, and Italian adolescents see themselves reflected in these words, even though, as I mentioned, the group had long passed the age of adolescence.
They are followed by a series of political slogans that will go down in history: "Tifiamo rivolta" ("Trafitto") to the famous "Produci, consuma, crepa". The point is simple, and complex at the same time: faithful to the line and the music, the CCCP narrate their vision of the world, sometimes of a microcosm that wants to expand to represent something far greater, using a new form of communication, light-years away from that of singer-songwriter music. Close to the Ramones, to be clear. Hence, short songs, broad guitar assaults, and short tracks, with few exceptions, in which the effective slogan matters, the concept captured in a few images, and words heavy as stones. If Guccini took ten minutes to tell a story, CCCP does it in two and with a quarter of the words of the Maestro. Iconoclasts to the extreme, defined as orthodox, their way of narrating life is, therefore, one of the most beautiful Italian musical revolutions ever.
Noteworthy, at least, is "Curami" with its obsessive and mantra-like "Sono la terapia", and the obsessiveness is one of the engines of their music, and the final, incredibly long, "Emillia paranoica". Seven minutes of delusional and seemingly disorganized chaos. Delightful instead is "Valium Tavor Serenase" which mixes, of course, the punk with the Casadeian "Romagna mia” with new words.
Printed by an independent label, Attack Punk, the album sold well and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, so much so that the group was signed by Virgin for the next record, much to the dismay of their die-hard fans who sarcastically renamed them the group faithful to the Lira, and no longer to the line.
Reissued in 2008, with new remixed versions, pardon, as written on the CD, remixulated. Because it may be punk, but Italian is important.

The greatness of the album lies in its perfect synthesis between the many souls of the group, balancing punk rawness with hypnotic post-punk experimentations.
