Bologna. A city like many others in the foggy Po Valley, yet a city that for several years has been producing a great number of artists. I'm not referring, of course, to the likes of Carried Out... actually, yes, why not... after all, I am fond of them.
The band has been active since autumn 2006 and in December of 2007 they released their first "effort": "Roots of Chemistry".
Science lovers and test tube fetishists you might say... quite the opposite. The lively Bologna quartet offers us a very respectable mix of punk rock, indie, and melodic west coast hardcore that's really not bad at all.
The work opens with a bang with "Escherichia coli", a fast and dry track, a tribute to all those who, at least once in their life, have felt at least a bit like bacteria in the intestinal flora. It's followed by the powerful attack of "Net Below", a punk rock track through and through. The third track is "The Stoic suicide", one of the most valuable tracks, where a deceptively clean intro leads to a vigorous melodic hardcore gallop between No Use for a Name and alternative rock. Then it's the turn of "Double Bond", the "slow knockout", introspective just enough, melodic punk. And this chemistry reference could only end with the hardcore of "Arsenic free diving" where the group perhaps shows a bit more anger and desire to be heard.
Overall positive judgment. The recording could certainly have been polished more, but nothing to reproach for a demo of this magnitude. These guys still have a lot to offer and I believe they are on a very good path and what better springboard than the Bologna underground? Everyone might say, and you could also be right. Who knows, maybe one day we'll even see Carried Out in the annals of the alternative and punk music greats.
