Caroline Lavelle, niece of an artist, has been playing since the age of 4 and graduated from the Royal College of Music in London in cello and compositions.
An eclectic artist, not only a musician but also a vocalist and a beautiful woman (I had the fortune of admiring her from the front row at a Loreena McKennitt concert), she has collaborated with artists of the caliber of Peter Gabriel, Loreena McKennitt (with whom she is currently touring), Vangelis, Massive Attack, Radiohead, The Cranberries, and William Orbit.
As can be understood from her collaborations, her music does not stop at classical but also ranges to pop, ambient, new age, and new electronic sounds and trends and this is particularly evident on this 2001 CD (although I have a 2002 reissue with 3 bonus tracks, namely "Brilliant Midnight 2.0").
Here with a special guest who is Michael Nyman (the composer of the film "The Piano" soundtrack), the CD alternates pieces from contemporary/classical ambient like "Lost Voices" which opens the CD and touches a deep emotional sphere with its cello solo (reminds me of cellist Jacqueline Du Pré famous in the '50s and '60s), "Anima Rising", "The Fall", "Farther Than The Sun" (to me, the latter is a jewel on this CD), "Le Pourquoi", "Mangoes", "Universal" and "Twisted Ends", to Morcheeba style pieces like "Firefly Night"; Massive Attack "She Said" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"; William Orbit "Anxiety", "All I Have" and "Karma"; and Celtic traditionals rearranged in ambient/electronic style like "Home Of The Whale" and "Siamant'o".
A new age and profound CD also in its lyrics that speak of karma and universal love, refined and original also for her somewhat dark but sweet voice and her cello, which when not complemented by Caroline's singing, magnificently stands in for her with the way it is played.
Here we are in the presence of one of the greatest cellists of our time.
Her actual discography, excluding collaborations with other artists, consists of 4 CDs:
SPIRIT from 1995;
BRILLIANT MIDNIGHT from 2001;
BRILLIANT MIDNIGHT 2.0 (reissue) from 2002;
A DISTANT BELL from 2004
