Indecisive until the last minute about going or not, I finally decided, "when will I have the chance to see the 'cantantessa' so close to home again?" So, I decided to go even by myself; I didn't care, for Carmen, this and more... I arrive half an hour early, buy the ticket, and sit in the sixth row on the side as indicated. Strangely, the lights go out at 9:15 PM, but it's not Carmen on stage but the opening act: Agata Lo Certo. On stage, it's just her with her acoustic guitar and another guitarist. She sings five songs from her first album and leaves.
Very talented, although her voice sounds perhaps too similar to the 'cantantessa.' Could she be her cousin? The lights come back on but then go off again immediately: it's 9:45 PM, and the 'cantantessa' with her band takes the stage. Tonight, Carmen is accompanied on stage by the Lautari, a group of Sicilian musicians. In total, there are eight on stage besides Carmen: violin, double bass, flute, banjo, percussion, trumpet, drums, and
a second guitar.
The first song is "Tutto su Eva", the opening track of the new album "Eva contro Eva" which she will present tonight to the audience in Macerata. Right after, we start moving (in our seats, of course) with "Fiori d'arancio", a track from the 2003 album "L'eccezione." It continues with another song from that album, "Matilde odiava i gatti", one of the most energetic pieces in the 'cantantessa's' repertoire. Songs from the latest album alternate with older and more well-known pieces by Consoli. After a few songs from "Eva contro Eva," Carmen is left alone on stage with her guitar: it's time for songs like "In funzione di nessuna" and "Fino all'ultimo".
The other musicians return to the stage, and songs are played that sound even more beautiful in the stunning setting of the Sferisterio, such as "Amore di plastica" sung in unison by the entire audience, "Signor Tentenna", and "Venere" which close the first part of the show. Carmen returns to the stage with her guitar, and it's time for "L'ultimo bacio", sung by the whole audience. Carmen's voice resonates in this place with such a sweetness that it gives you goosebumps and shivers. Her beauty and voice even pale the moon shining on this cool late summer evening. A gentle breeze rises, moving the 'cantantessa's' hair beautifully: the choir of the entire audience is just for her tonight.
"Parole di burro" and a powerful "Contessa miseria" close the first encore. The 'cantantessa' and her band return to the stage for a romantic "Maria Catena". The last piece of this fantastic concert is introduced by Carmen as a classic Sicilian piece: it's "Malarazza". A beautiful song already covered by Roy Paci in his latest album.
In conclusion, an unforgettable concert in a perfect location on a cool day at the end of August. One small flaw in an otherwise perfect concert was the absence of historical pieces like "Confusa e felice", "In bianco e nero", "Pioggia d'aprile", "L'eccezione". This concert was yet another proof that Carmen Consoli is the best Italian voice..
I recommend going to see a concert of the 'cantantessa' from this latest tour to those who didn't like "Eva contro Eva" because the new songs live sound much better than on the album, and I recommend seeing her live to those who liked her latest CD because Carmen is Carmen...
