Antonio Carlos Santos de Freitas (Carlihos Brown in honor of the Godfather of funk), born in 1962, is not just a Brazilian percussionist with a multitude of collaborations with artists worldwide under his belt, but a well-rounded musician who has managed to modernize Brazilian music through his work, with a mix of samba, funk, reggae, and electronics.
This first solo effort from 1996 produced by Arto Lindsay (already the producer for Veloso, Monte, Byrne L. Anderson, and others) is perhaps his best work, where the tracks flow smoothly, alternating between purely rhythmic tracks and others more melodic, sung in a mix of English-Brazilian language. Notable is the piece "Quixabeira", in which he employs the voices of the legendary Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania.
An album that can rightly be considered a milestone in "do brasil" music. Insert it in your player and start dancing.
