Don Van Vliet, known as Captain Beefheart, was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader and painter. He led Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, released seminal experimental albums (notably Trout Mask Replica) and retired from music in 1982 to devote himself to painting.

Born Don Van Vliet. Trout Mask Replica was produced by Frank Zappa. Van Vliet retired from music in 1982 to focus on visual art. He collaborated or had a long-term friendship with Frank Zappa.
