American alto saxophonist; prominent in hard bop and soul jazz; member of Miles Davis’s late‑1950s sextet (including Kind of Blue); led groups with Nat Adderley; active 1955–1975; noted for the hit “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”.

Four glowing DeBaser reviews trace Cannonball Adderley from the Blue Note classic Somethin' Else to the party-charged Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!, the groovy Money in the Pocket, and a bop-infused Brazilian detour on Cannonball's Bossa Nova. Themes include his ‘fat’ alto tone, crowd-pleasing stage patter, tight interplay with Miles Davis, Nat Adderley and Joe Zawinul, and early use of electric piano. The overall verdict is celebratory and warm.
