I Cani dei Portici are a drum/guitar duo, playing a mix of Instrumental Noise Rock/Mathcore, and this "Hype For Nothing" is an album made up of 6 tracks with a duration of 26 minutes. There are really noisy parts, some pretty big blocks to digest. In fact, after a 20-second intro, it kicks off right away with "Break Away", a beautiful violent composition that then in its progression takes on the contours of a somewhat nuanced post-rock and after the violent contortions, there is a bit of tranquility and peace, only to start again to flatten the air with its exhausting notes that evoke Noise assault. Like the next "ASAP", it is a micro-piece of one minute and 19 seconds where the rawness and the time shifts of Mathcore wear out the listeners' eardrums. In "Hype For Nothing", there are alternating virtuoso instrumental counterpoints that become increasingly spasmodic and virulent, a guitar/drum intertwining that then unexpectedly becomes melodic at the end of the piece, only to resume grinding out intense Noise Rock, being the most satisfying track of the bunch. "Disappointment Waltz" begins with an arpeggio with the gentle counterpoint of the drums, then transforms over its nearly seven-minute duration. A guitar that is pure Noise experimentalism, overwhelmed by the irregular tempos of the drums—this is the piece where the atmospheres become more changeable and I dare say the most progressive track of the album. The last "Farfalle" is post-rock with a sad and melancholic spoken/sung part in Italian, completely opposite to what we had become accustomed to hearing so far, a seven-minute arpeggio that seems endless, almost touching on singer-songwriter territory. This album by Cani dei Portici is really well done, for those who love the blend of various genres. You can expect anything from one moment to the next in this "Hype For Nothing", and here lies the beauty of their disturbing music.
