Long-awaited debut for this excellent band from Verona that already received critical acclaim after last year's EP "The North Side Of Summer".
The album... and what an album... reflects sixties-Californian sounds, yet wrapped in a typically '90s feel and enriched by a layer of energetic guitars that are extremely effective in creating highly emotional melodies without ever being predictable. The most immediate comparisons can be found in bands such as Weezer (the early ones), Grandaddy, and Death Cab For Cutie, while regarding the Italian scene, one might think of the talented Yuppie Flu, especially for the vocals.
Right from the initial title track, you realize the summer atmosphere tinged with a slight melancholy that they want us to breathe... a clear example being the subsequent and wonderful "15th Of August" and the single "Summer Teenage Girl"! What strikes and moves the most are, however, the instrumental parts or codas of some tracks... both the aforementioned tracks, the album's masterpiece "The North Side Of Summer", and the closing "Good News" are enriched by a true guitar crescendo worthy of the best Explosions In The Sky.
Carefree songs, incredibly catchy and with always fitting refrains... ready to soundtrack scorching summers, car trips with the wind in your hair, love stories under the stars, and evening parties with watermelon and chilled drinks!! The listen can therefore be casual yet the album hides many nuances, surely discernible through more meticulous listening.
Congratulations therefore to the "Canadians", capable of delivering an excellent and internationally leveled debut... proven by the awards received at the Heineken and MySpace Contest. Alongside "Afraid To Dance" by Port-Royal and "Dividing Opinions" by Giardini Di Mirò, "A Sky With No Stars" is a serious contender for the best Italian album of 2007!
EMOTIONAL.
