THE REVIEW

On their fifth studio album, in 1977 Camel released what I consider to be their masterpiece; slightly different compared to their previous records (perhaps also due to the change of bassist, in this album Richard Sinclair, former Caravan, appears and Brian Eno also contributes discreetly yet importantly).

The sound shifts slightly towards the Canterbury scene (mainly thanks to Sinclair's contribution) with an excellent balance between progressive and jazz, creating fairy-tale atmospheres thanks to the excellent chemistry among the musicians, far from the virtuosic excesses of other prog bands.

Among the tracks of the CD, the lively "First Light" and the almost Fripp-like "Elke" stand out. Ultimately, an album that must not be missing from any respectable CD collection (besides, it's also very affordable, just 5 euros!)

Camel continue their adventure in a stormy sea, as always gifting us with small masterpieces of simplicity.

First Light is a wonderful instrumental piece... crowned by the joint entrance of guitar and sax, played by distinguished guest Mel Collins.
