Belonging to that fringe of the French scene rooted in the earliest Norwegian releases—both in compositional terms (albeit with the proper personal touches, especially in terms of pathos and elegance) and in lo-fi production—Cachot d'Effroi, a project entirely steered by Carcasse Enchaînée, reissues its second full-length—originally self-released in 2024—through the excellent Drakkar Productions: "Dans le cimetière abandonné".

The darkthronian streak is once more quite prominent, as was already evident in the self-titled debut; this time, however, the approach is less atmospheric, with a DSBM touch that in certain passages becomes genuinely pronounced. Carcasse Enchaînée fuses the typical iconoclastic language of the black flame with the romantic impulse of French Decadence, and some fairly melodic Post dynamics that remain always restrained, never clashing with the core structure.

"Dans le cimetière abandonné" emanates a cemetery aura that’s hard to resist... Just like every dark enchantment whose power lies in the allure bestowed by its deadly outcomes. This is an LP strictly for connoisseurs and devotees of the old guard, and above all for those who deeply appreciate the French poetic tradition... Here, it’s inevitable to recall names such as Celestia, Mortifera, Nehëmah, and Darvulia, but also something of the iconic Les légions noires (notably Belkètre and Mütiilation).

...Another excellent release in this bleak and ominous 2025.
