Among the many satirical animated series, some very biting and mean, others less so, this American TV series created in '98 by Butch Hartman stands out, primarily broadcast in Italy on the dominant satellite platform. This "Fairy Oddparents" is a very curious product and in many ways more appealing than similar series; it is a ruthless satire on the small American bourgeois world where reality is so useless and poor that it can and must be manipulated with the help of two fairy godparents who are only guardians of the most unfortunate and mocked little ones on earth.
The protagonist is the poor Timmy Turner, a child neglected by everyone and chronically ridiculed and mistreated at school, forgotten by his parents who don't give him affection and often leave him in the care of the babysitter Vicky, a true schizoid, wicked and diabolical madwoman. Coming to Timmy's rescue are his two fairy godparents, Wanda and Cosmo, winged fairies who are supposed to be his conscience and wisdom, but it's not always the case and amid the delirious wishes granted by the two, the fantasy-filled days of a ten-year-old child unfold.
A series that targets the decay of human relationships in contemporary society, especially family and school, thus less global in the themes examined compared to "The Simpsons" or "South Park", but uses language also aimed at a younger audience and free of vulgarity yet no less sharp. The vivid pastel colors, the rapid and frenetic pace combined with the incredible array of more or less quirky characters make this series a pleasant incorrect product, however, among the many adventures of Timmy and his fairy godparents, in the end, reality always prevails, as if to say: "we must live in it, let's at least try to take the best part".
